FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions What is a short haul move? This is a move that is less than 450 miles. Make sure to inquire with your moving company as you may have to pay long distance charges even for short haul moves. What is a local move? This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state. What is an intrastate move? This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state. Do I have to empty all of my filing cabinets? Metal filing cabinets with 2-drawers can be left full, but you should empty the top 2 drawers of a 4-drawer cabinet. You should also completely empty all lateral file cabinets and all drawers of a wood cabinet. Can I leave my clothing in dresser or chest drawers? You can leave lightweight clothing such as blouses, lingerie, shirts and sweaters in drawers. However, don’t leave heavy items such as sheets, table linens or books in drawers because they damage the furniture. Also remove any valuable or fragile items before the move. What is an order for service? This is a signed written agreement authorizing your moving company to transport your goods. Can movers transport my hot tub or spa? Yes, but moving companies will charge extra because these items require a special dolly and flatbed truck. What is third party service? This is a service contracted out to people other than the movers. It may include waterbed service, household cleaning or appliance servicing. What is a full service move? This is the most common type of move where your moving company will transport all of your household goods to your new destination. They will be loaded from every room of your current residence and placed in the rooms of your new home. Individual pieces of furniture are also wrapped in blankets for protection during the move. What should I do with kitchen items that I need to use? We recommend that you pack up all your items or have the movers pack them and prepare to dine out or use paper plates for a few days prior to your move. What items should I move myself if I have time before the move? We recommend that you focus on packing and moving any highly breakable objects such as pictures and collectibles as well as very sentimental items. What is a high value article? This refers to any items in a shipment that are valued at more than $100 per pound. What is double-drive time? In California, all movers are required to charge double-drive time. They don’t charge you for the time required to get to your destination and then back to their moving branch. Instead, they charge double the time for the actual move. |
